AFCON 2023: Asante Kotoko's Richmond Lamptey makes final squad for Ghana

Asante Kotoko SC midfielder, Richmond Lamptey, has found his name amongst the final twenty-seven players to represent Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, to be held in Ivory Coast.

The provisional 55-man-squad submitted to the Confederations of Africa Football, CAF, few days ago had the name of the 27-year-old and has finally being confirmed as part of the squad.

Head coach Chris Hughton announced his team for the tournament on Monday, January 1, 2024 at the Alisa Hotel and had three local players including Asante Kotoko SC's captain name inched in the squad.

It comes as no surprise as Richmond Lamptey is having a season to remember in the 2023-24 Ghana Premier League with the "Porcupine Warriors" who finished third on the league table with 29 points after the first round of the season.

He has been in the local scene for close to a decade after featuring for West Africa Football Academy, WAFA, Inter Allies and now with Asante Kotoko SC in his third season.

Having chalked vast experience in the local terrain, Richmond Lamptey is expected to fill in the shoes of other players who have been dropped for the tournament.

He has scored twice and assisted six times in the season and has helped reshape the fortunes of the club after a poor start to the season. Lamptey has orchestrated the resuscitatation of the club as they have gone unbeaten in their last six matches to end the first round.

Ghana will start her ten days camping on January 2, 2024 in Kumasi, Ghana and will have a test match against Namibia before moving to Ivory Coast for the tournament.
