AFCON 2023: Matar Sarr cleared to join Terranga Lions

Tottenham Hotspurs midfield general, Pape Matar Sarr has been passed fit to join the train with Terranga Lions of Senegal as they head to Ivory Coast for AFCON 2023.

It will be recalled that the midfielder's fitness was in limbo following the injury scare in the Spurs and Bournemouth game on the New Year's eve.

Sarr was seen in tears as he walked off the pitch following the hamstring injury that forced him out of the game.

Pape Matar Sarr was named among the final squad of Coach Aliou Cisse of  Senegal as they seek to defend the title in Ivory Coast.

The 21 year old after been assessed on Tuesday, has been declared fit and has also signed a contract extension with the London club till 2030.

Tottenham Hotspurs are missing the trio of Yves Bissouma of Mali, Pape Matar Sarr of Senegal and Son Heung Min of South Korea in January as both the AFCON and Asia Cup will be ongoing.

Matar Sarr is expected to form a strong midfield trio with Iddrisa Gana Gueye and Nampalys Mendy in Ivory Coast with Sadio Mane, Nicholas Jackson and Ismaila Sarr leading the attack in the AFCON.

Aliou Cisse will be very happy with the availability of the young Spurs midfielder as the defending champions, Senegal, head to Ivory Coast for the continental showpiece this month.

Senegal are paired in Group C, which could be termed as the group of death as it includes Cameroon, Guinea and Gambia.
