AFCON 2023: Zidane declines Algerian job

 Zinedine Zidane has reportedly, declined opportunity to take over as the Coach of the the Desert Foxes of Algeria, according to French outlet L'Equipe.



The head of the Algerian technical bench role has been vacant following the resignation of Djamel Belmadi after Algeria made a disastrous campaign at the AFCON following their elimination after group stages making it a second trot in the tournament.

Algeria were paired in Group D with Angela, Burkina Faso and Mauritania. They drew their first two games against Angola and against Burkina Faso and lost narrowly against Mauritania which happens to be Mauritania's first ever win in the history of the tournament as it landed them a final 16 spot.

L'Equipe understands the 1998 World Cup winner was flattered by the job opportunity offered him by the Algerian Football Federation but chose to decline the country of his African descent.

Zidane has not been in the dugout since 2021 after his resignation from Real Madrid. 

His strong interest has been landing the French National Team job which is still been occupied by teammate Didier Deschamps who extended his contract after 2022 World Cup till 2026.
       
The Algerian Football Federation have reportedly lined up a potential replacement for Djamel Belmadi including Herve Renard, Vahid Halihodzic, Vladimir Petkovic and Jorge Sampaoli.
