PSG right back Achraf Hakimi has expressed his happiness as he joins his team mates in camp. The Moroccan right back was recently named among the last 3 nominees of the CAF Best Awards at ceremony held in Marrakech, Morocco.
With huge expectations, Atlas Lions are one of the sides people want to see their exploits especially when they shocked the whole world by becoming first African team to reach the semi-finals in Qatar 2022. That was absolutely unprecedented.
"I'm very happy to join my team mates and continue working with the group. I want to thank all the fans who support me all the time, even in difficult times". Hakimi said said at a training session of the Atlas Lions.
"I'm going to give my all for the national team and I hope we will achieve some great things", said by the freshly crowned Champions trophy winner with PSG.
The Atlas Lions have not been top performers in the AFCON over the years.
They struggle to end up in the last 4 since 2004 in Tunisia when they lost in the finals against the hosts.
Failing to qualify in 2010, they didn't go past the group stages in 2012, 2013 and couldn't appear in 2015 when they declined hosting due to Ebola virus scare.
They had a quarter final appearance in 2017 as they lost to Egypt in 2017 and 2021 while they were eliminated by Benin in the Round of 16 in Egypt 2019.
Walid Regragui will be coming with a good team as Hakimi, Ziyech, En Neysri, Boufal, Azzedine Ounahi, Amrabat with Gk Yassin Bono who gave a good account in Sevilla's Europa League win over AS Roma last year.
In light of this, Morocco has been tipped as one of the favourites to win the AFCON.
