AFCON 2023: Dede Ayew eyes scoring record at the AFCON

The Black Stars of Ghana captain, Andre Dede Ayew has set his sight on a goalscoring record at AFCON 2023 which is set to start in Ivory Coast.

The son of Ghanaian legend Abedi Pele who recently joined Le Havre in French Lig 1, has set his sight on scoring in six AFCON tournaments.

His compatriot Asamoah Gyan, Kalusha Bwalya of Zambia and record all time scorer Samuel Eto'o of Cameroon, are the only players to hold this record in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations.

"My priority is to start or come off the bench in Ivory Coast,"Ayew told reporters.

"After that let's see what will happen. What is most important is that, Ghana do well in this competition as we had a bad 2021Cup of Nations, going out of the first round".

The Ghanaian captain, aside the scoring record, will equal appearances of Ahmed Hassan former Egypt captain and Rigobert Song, the current Coach of Cameroon with eight appearances at the continental showpiece.

The Black Stars had a humiliating tournament in the last time in Cameroon.

In a must win situation, the Black Stars were crashed by 3:2 by minnows Comoros, the team that only made its debut in the AFCON.

With age not been on the side of the Ghanaian veteran, some section of Ghanaians had wanted the captain to be axed from the team but the technical team kept faith in the Abedi Pele's son.

"Andre Ayew contributes a lot on and off the field," said by Ex Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion manager, Chris Hughton who will be in the dugout of the Black Stars.

Andre Dede Ayew has featured in all the AFCON between 2008 and 2021 with the exception of 2013 in South Africa.

He will be appearing in the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast alongside his younger brother Jordan Ayew.

The Black Stars will be meeting Cape Verde, Egypt and Mozambique in Group B of AFCON 2023.
