End of an era for Belmadi as Algeria crashed out of AFCON

The Desert Foxes of Algeria will say goodbye to the Africa Cup of Nations, Ivory Coast 2023 following their disastrous campaign that has seen them eliminated after losing final Group D fixture against minnows, Mauritania.

The 2019 African champions have now been eliminated from the group stages in two consecutive AFCON tournaments.

In Cameroon 2021, they went out as defending champions after earning just a point and that has been repeated this time with another group stage elimination.

Djamel Belmadi masterminded their tremendous performance in 2019 in Egypt as they went all out beating Senegal in the finals.

After group stage elimination in the last Afcon, Algeria came close to World Cup return in Qatar 2022 as they blew their lead away against Cameroon.

Some Algerian football fans have criticized Belmandi's player relations especially with the way he dealt with some national team stars.

Aside that, his tactics tend to be outmoded with poor showing of defensive shield and lack of ideas upfront.

Algeria were in a group with Angola, Burkina Faso and Mauritania as they only managed 2 points from the three games conceding in each match up to 4 and scoring 3.

Riyadh Mahrez, Islam Slimani, Baghdad Bounedjah, Sofiane Feghouli, Aissa Mandi, Nabil Bentaleb were all part of the generation that holds Algerian football in the last decade.

With this poor AFCON performance leading to group exit, it's almost certain to be the end of an era with the Desert Foxes.

Djamel Belmadi has been one of respected African coaches over the years as he won Algeria its second AFCON trophy in 2019.
