It became difficult catching Nigerians penalties - Williams

The captain of Bafana Bafana Ronwen Williams has talked about the AFCON and his heroic performance in the just ended tournament in Ivory Coast as South Africa won a Bronze medal in the continental showpiece in West Africa.

The Mamelodi Sundowns goalie displayed good sense of anticipation in the entire tournament as he led his nation to Ivory Coast after missing out in the last AFCON in Cameroon 2021.

On the CBS Golazo show, Williams appeared on a video interview where he talked about the participation of South Africa and how heroic his performance was when he became the first goalkeeper to save 4 penalties in a major AFCON tournament.

After, Williams admitted it was difficult to catch the penalties of Nigeria. "I just try and remain calm, the most important thing is to study. There's so much information on the internet now and you know the analysts, they play a big part. They help us to study penalties they try and follow trends as well."

"You know my phone is full of gallery of teams I've played penalty shootout with and you obviously watch as much as possible, you know in football it's possible, you know it but at the end of the day it's a lottery because as much as we studying them, they are also studying us".

"So as you could see, the Nigeria game prior to the Cape Verde Road one, one of the five penalties, they went down the middle. So you know, then they started studying me as well. So I need to come up. Like I saw the Nigerians, all of them were going straight".

Ronwen Williams saved 4 penalties in the quarter finals against Cape Verde as he went through all the directions on the side ways.

Therefore the Super Eagles really studied Williams well in the shootout as Troost Ekong, Terem Moffi, Kenneth Omeruo and Kelechi Iheanacho all scored to earn Nigeria a spot in the finals of the AFCON.
