AFCON 2025 to be held in December

The Confederation of Africa Football, CAF, have decided to hold the next Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026.

After a thorough discussion held today, CAF have unanimously concluded to allow Morocco to have ample time to execute the maiden edition of the expanded FIFA Club World Cup which comes off in July 2025.

This moves away the initial plans of CAF to host the edition of AFCON in June/July to a favourable December 2025 through to January 2026 in Morocco.

This means that players from participating countries will forfeit a lot of games during the time at their clubs, especially those from the English Premier League who do not have Christmas break.

The last edition of AFCON was held in Cote D'Ivoire where the host annexed the trophy for the third time after a patchy performance in the gepup stage having to wait for the last geoup stage game in group F to determine their fate.

The next host got dismissed in the Round of 16 dashing away hopes after an historic World Cup semi final in Qatar 2022.
