PARIS 2024: Australia beat Zambia in 11 goal thriller

Michelle Haymen was the heroine of the day as she scored the last goal of the game to earn Australia a 6:5 win over Zambia in the Women's football at Paris 2024 Olympics.

Zambia's captain Barbara Banda opened the scoreline in the early minutes the game as Australia had an equalizer from Allana. US based Rachel pKundananji doubled the lead for the Africans.

Hayley Ruso also scored the second goal for Australia as Barbara Banda made efforts to score twice to powe the Copper Queens into a 4:2 lead before the end of the first half. This marked Banda's third hat trick at the Olympics.

Australia came strongly in the game after the start of second half but they conceded again from a header courtesy Rachel Kundananji header from Barbara Banda's cross as the Copper Queens opened a 3 goal lead in the  52nd minute.

Coach Tony Gustavsson of Australia made three substitutions as he introduced Michelle Haymen, Kaitlyn Thorpey and Clare Wheeler and that completely changed the game as the Matildas injected a lot of urgency in their play and it completely paid off.

With the Matildas perseverance, an own goal from Musole, Caitlin Ford's goal, penalty from Steph Colly and Michelle Haymen's strike earned Australia their hard earned victory over Zambia in a double figure goal thriller.
